Investment background
Sovereign invested in Utility Bidder in December 2018, backing a management buy‑out of one of the UK’s leading energy brokers serving small and medium‑sized enterprises. Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Corby, Utility Bidder had built a strong reputation for customer service, deep relationships with energy suppliers and an increasingly sophisticated multi‑channel sales model.
At the point of investment, the business operated in a large, fragmented and growing market, supported by high customer retention rates and attractive entry pricing. Sovereign partnered with the management team to accelerate the next phase of growth, combining organic initiatives with the potential for Buy & Build consolidation. As part of the transaction, Sovereign also supported management enhancement, including the appointment of an experienced non‑executive chair to strengthen strategic oversight and governance.
The growth story
During Sovereign’s ownership, Utility Bidder continued to develop as a scalable, technology‑enabled broker focused on delivering value to SME customers. Investment was directed towards strengthening the leadership team, supporting digital and systems capabilities, and enhancing operational processes to support sustainable growth.
Sovereign worked closely with the company to professionalise internal functions, strengthen financial reporting and governance, and support ESG initiatives, including energy efficiency support for customers and improvements in cyber security and people practices.
In 2026, Sovereign exited the investment to Bionic, one of the UK’s largest SME comparison platforms.
